Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux reviewed actuarial reports from the New Orleans Firefighters’ Pension and Relief Fund. Its board’s practices cost city taxpayers $150 million from 1999 to 2015. Quatrevaux implied that firefighters are being overcompensated for injuries saying that, “Some of these permanently disabled people are carrying 50-pounds of Sheetrock up ladders [in their post-service careers].” Further, due to pension rules, a majority of firefighters deemed disabled received more than 100 percent of their salary in their final year on the books.
