A new study indicates that mindfulness may benefit chronic pain sufferers. The study participants engaged in a cold pressor task as a part of the larger study. Threat appraisal was assessed immediately after instructions, indicating that the task would be very painful, but before actually engaging in it. The findings, which were presented at the 2017 annual meeting of the American Pain Society, indicated a significant difference in a threat appraisal of pain between individuals experiencing ongoing pain and those anticipating pain.
