The FDA approved Epidiolex (cannabidiol) [CBD] oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. This is the first FDA-approved drug that contains a purified drug substance derived from marijuana. A statement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb on “the importance of conducting proper research to prove safe and effective medical uses for the active chemicals in marijuana and its components” followed the approval statement almost immediately. Advocates for medical marijuana argue that marijuana’s federal status as a Schedule I substance under the FDA is inhibiting quality research.
