The surviving spouses of first responders killed on the job in Texas will soon be entitled to lifetime death benefits, even if they remarry. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed HB 1094 into law late last week. Previously, the spouses of first responders would receive death benefits only until/if they remarried, in which case the affected spouse would receive a lump sum equivalent to two years of death benefits. The new law also includes volunteer first responders and is similar to legislation a 2013 law in New Jersey allowing lifetime death benefits for the spouses of some first responders. The benefit changes are not retroactive.
