On Tuesday, September 20th, 2016, Louisiana Comp Blog hosted another Comp in Focus industry issues luncheon at Mr. B’s Bistro in New Orleans. The lunch, which is held bimonthly and features a speaker on current events and industry concerns, was the best attended in the event’s year-long history.
Steve Alexander, an actuary with his own Alexander Actuarial Consulting in Florida, spoke about NCCI and its role in the workers’ comp industry nationally, in his home state, and regionally. In particular, Alexander hammered NCCI’s influence in Florida and criticized its recent “deceptive” filing in Florida, which proposes a nearly 20 percent increase in rates due to a series of Florida Supreme Court decisions.
On the local front, attendees (which ranged from regulators and agents to attorneys from both sides of the system to company executives) quizzed Alexander on how attorney fees play into rate filings and on how NCCI incorporates data from workers’ comp group self-insurance funds.
The next Comp in Focus event will be held in November, details forthcoming.
