Comp in Focus is a bimonthly luncheon speaker series presented by Louisiana Comp Blog. The series addresses emergent issues in the workers’ compensation industry, with speakers from both employer/insurer and claimant/labor sides of the arena.
More than a lecture, Comp in Focus seeks to create a dialogue in the comp community on the “big picture” issues and how they affect us on a local level.
The speakers for Tuesday, July 19th, 2016 at Mr. B’s Bistro in New Orleans are Charles Davoli and Nathan Schrantz. Register here.
Mr. Davoli, well-known claimant attorney, mediator and labor activist will address the recent Florida and Utah Supreme Court decisions on attorney fees in workers’ comp. Could Louisiana face similar challenges to our attorney fee schedule? What does it mean to suggest that low returns for claimant attorneys constitute a violation of due process?
Mr. Schrantz, a defense attorney who practices both in Louisiana and in Mississippi, will lead a second discussion about attorney fees, this time as it relates to Louisiana’s inordinately high defense costs. Why are payments so high? Are we simply more litigious? Is there anything that can be done at the policy level? Are Louisiana workers’ comp cases more complicated, leading to the higher payments to defense attorneys to challenge claims?
Join us in the debate! Register here.
As usual, we will begin with wine and networking at 11 AM, followed by lunch and discussion at 11:45. The event concludes at 1 PM. Parking for attendees is available at a discounted rate through Mr. B’s at Solari’s garage located at 721 Iberville Street (across from Dickie Brennan’s in the French Quarter).
