The Association of Responsible Alternatives to Workers’ Compensation (ARAWC) says that it “welcomes” the review of opt out benefit plans expected to be performed by the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL). NCOIL voted at its annual meeting last month to investigate workers’ comp alternatives, especially in light of a series of highly critical ProPublica/NPR reports painting the programs as little more than an attempt to send the concept of workplace injury benefits back to the early 20th century. In a statement to Business Insurance, ARAWC said that “welcomes the opportunity” to discuss the benefits of opt out (which the organization calls “the Option”). NCOIL has not taken a position on the issue.
