There were 7 million job openings on the last business day of September 2018 and about 6.1 million unemployed people in September, according to new Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers. The ratio of unemployed people to job openings was 0.9 in September, the lowest rate recorded in the job openings data, which began in December 2000. The number of unemployed persons per job opening has ranged between 0.9 and 1.1 since January 2018.
