Compensation costs for private industry workers rose 2.3 percent over the year ending March 2017, according to new Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) numbers. Wages and salaries for private industry workers, which make up about 70 percent of compensation costs, rose 2.6 percent over the year. Compensation costs increased 4.3 percent over the year for workers in the leisure and hospitality industry, the largest increase among private industries. The 4.6-percent over-the-year increase in wages and salaries for leisure and hospitality workers was also the largest 12-month percentage increase across private industries.
