From May 2016 to May 2017, nonfarm payroll employment increased in 304 metropolitan areas, decreased in 77 areas, and was unchanged in 6 areas, according to new Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers. Louisiana was a low point in the data. Houma-Thibodaux, Louisiana came in second for the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in employment (–4.7 percent). Further, the same Louisiana region has the largest over-the-year total decreases in employment (–4,200). This was followed by Shreveport-Bossier City, Louisiana (–3,000), and Rochester, New York (–2,700).
