The number of quits, which are generally voluntary separations initiated by employees, was 3.2 million in November 2017, according to new Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) numbers. There were 1.7 million layoffs and discharges, which are involuntary separations initiated by employers. There were 341,000 other separations resulting from retirement, death, disability, and transfers to other locations of the same firm.
