VICE filmmakers Sebastian Weis and Manuel Freundt discovered that Polish shipyards (who supply many countries across Europe) are using North Korean labor en masse, after they obtained an accident report in which a North Korean laborer burned to death. The lack of safety protocol revealed by the accident – and the fact that the North Korean worker was apparently in the country legally – set off an investigation by Weis and Freundt, who tracked down the Polish businesses behind the recruitment of North Koreans. Calling the system a form of slavery numerous times, the pair contests in their mini documentary that unscrupulous Polish companies have been able to skirt EU health, safety and wage laws. Further, the wages withheld from the workers likely make it into the hands of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, whose country has very few means of gaining foreign currency due to widespread economic sanctions.
