Monsanto announced that it has preliminary plans for a potential $1 billion expansion of its herbicide-producing operations in Luling. The board is expected to consider a final decision early next year. If implemented, the project would create 95 new direct jobs at an average salary of $76,500, plus benefits. The Luling plant currently has about 645 employees. According to CityBusiness, Louisiana Economic Development estimates that the project would result in an additional 450 new indirect jobs in the state, for a total of more than 540 new jobs. The company estimates development of the project would generate 1,000 construction jobs at peak building activity.
