A state district judge in Iberville Parish has allowed the first civil trial brought by workers injured in the Williams Olefins complex fire in Geismar three years ago to proceed. As the Advocate reports, Judge Elizabeth A. Engolio of the 18th Judicial District denied the company’s motion for summary judgment; a September 6th trial is scheduled for the first group of five plaintiffs in Plaquemine. The ruling comes just a month after another district court judge in Ascension Parish agreed to dismiss Williams from separate suits brought by several plaintiffs also alleging injury in the explosion. The June 13th, 2013, blast at the complex, which was then undergoing a $300 million ethylene expansion, killed two men and injured 114 workers.
