After an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division (WHD), Jacques-Imo Café has paid $55,288 in civil money penalties for violating multiple child labor provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The investigation began because a worker later found to be a 13-year-old child suffered severe burns after carrying hot oil down a flight of stairs. The legal age to work in Louisiana is 14-year-old. In addition to the injury, both the 13-year-old and a 15-year-old workers worked far beyond the permissible hours for minors.
