A new study published in the Annual Review of Public Health indicates that the focus of the public health (and workers’ comp) community needs to change from addressing the nonmedical use of painkillers to preventing and treating addiction. The authors recommend a multi-faceted approach performed in a three-tiered process, the key to which is ensuring that providers are educated about opioid prescribing: quickly identifying those who have recently become addicted, and providing treatment for those affected.
