UK-based Consort Medical announced plans to develop a nasal spray for opioid overdose treatment, in conjunction with Opiant Pharma. Opiant was given a $7.4 million grant from National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse for the development of a nasally-applied version of overdose treatment nalmefene. The drug will likely act as a competitor to Narcan spray, which is a naloxone-based treatment.
