Dr. Russell Portenoy, an early advocate for the use of opioids for chronic pain, will testify against his former allies at Purdue Pharma in a consolidated lawsuit in Ohio. According to Reuters, Portenoy began talking to plaintiffs’ attorneys in January of last year. He spent years promoting opioids as minimally addictive in speeches and forums and was named directly in several of the dozens of pending lawsuits filed by states and municipalities against opioid manufacturers across the country.
