New studies from Rand Corp. have concluded that abuse-deterrent formulations for opioid painkillers had the unintended consequence of pushing users to seek heroin instead. Lead researcher David Powell, PhD, told Pain Medicine News: “In effect, our analysis is testing both whether there was an increase in injection use due to reformulation and whether this increased injection use led to a higher rate of hepatitis C infections. Our results suggest that for both hypotheses, we are observing increases.”
