The Division of Intramural Research at the National Institutes of Health has announced its finding that yoga can help prevent or reverse the effects of chronic pain on the brain. The physiological effect of chronic pain on brain matter, in which gray matter volume and white matter integrity are altered over time, was found to be positively impacted by the ancient practice. According to researchers presenting the information at the 2015 meeting of the American Pain Society, a loss of gray matter can lead to memory impairment, emotional problems and decreased cognitive function; mind-body techniques such as yoga and meditation can counter such symptoms.
