The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Board of Directors is calling for action of opioid prescribing and use. Contained in the imperative articulated in the organization’s press release is “a comprehensive effort to increase and improve physician, caregiver and patient education; the tracking of opioid prescription use; research funding for alternative pain management; and support for more effective opioid abuse treatment programs.” Specifically, AAOS is seeking to standardize and depersonalize opioid prescribing indications and practices, plus expand the use of predictive opioid abuse tools.
