Waiting lists to receive the opioid dependence medication buprenorphine have grown to number in the hundreds, as heroin and painkillers remain much cheaper on the street. A Stateline report focusing on Vermont (one of the states where buprenorphine is easier to get) found that significant barriers to treatment exist, not the least of which is the fact that doctors need a special license to prescribe the medication and are fearful of the liability associated with providing it. President Obama has made better access to medication assisted treatment (MAT), of which buprenorphine is one, a tenant of his administration’s proposals to fight the opioid crisis across the country.
