The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded Louisiana $11 million to provide Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid dependent people in the state, among other grants. A total of $53 million will be distributed to 44 states, four tribes and D.C. for several programs as part of a national strategy to reduce overdoses and deaths. Louisiana will also receive funds associated with the “Strategic Prevention Framework Partnerships for Prescription Drugs Grants” and the “Prescription Drug Overdose: Data-Driven Prevention Initiative.” However, the White House has warned that more money will likely still be needed to combat the problem.
