Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, recently stopped marketing its opioid painkillers to doctors, a move some observers believe is tied to increasing awareness of the opioid epidemic across the country and how drug companies contributed to it. On February 9th, Purdue announced it would lay off 200 salespeople and halt marketing of OxyContin in doctors’ offices, a week after U.S. District Judge Dan Polster in Cleveland met with drugmakers fighting hundreds of opioid lawsuits filed by cities and counties.
