A new series of papers in The Lancet addresses how low back pain, a condition which affects 540 million people worldwide, is often mistreated. Researchers found that evidence would suggest first line care at the primary care doctor, with minimal treatment like physical activity. However, a high proportion of patients wind up in emergency rooms instead, sometimes prescribed opioids and discouraged from working.
