A group of coal miners will address Congress today about black lung disease. Their goal is to restore a higher excise tax on coal companies which goes toward the Black Lung Disability Trust Fund. According to Reuters, the excise tax was previously $1.10 per ton of underground coal. The tax was reduced to the original 1977 amount of 50 cents this year after Congress took no action. Cola companies had lobbied for the drop.
