The much-anticipated verdict in the Oklahoma opioid lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson was issued yesterday – J&J is on the hook for $572.1 million. The judgment is far less than investors and observers thought it would be, sending J&J’s stock up yesterday. The Oklahoma AG had asked for $17 billion, using an unusual public nuisance statute to accuse the drugmaker. This case has been seen as a harbinger for another major case in Ohio which will go to trial this Fall and involves thousands of lawsuits that were consolidated in one jurisdiction. J&J said that it will appeal the decision.
