The AP is reporting that Louisiana patients are struggling to afford the medical marijuana products now available in sanctioned dispensaries across the state. The only product currently allowed is a marijuana tincture, one bottle of which can cost between $90 and $220 depending on concentration. A source for the AP piece who operates a medical marijuana clinic in Baton Rouge indicated that at current prices, a chronic pain patient’s costs would be $1,000 per month. Producers and pharmacists of the product say the prices are due to the regulatory environment, limited supply, and the fact that they operate as “start-ups.” An increase in patients would likely lower prices, if supply could meet that increased demand.
