In national safety news:

Ashley Furniture has been slapped with $1.76 million in fines after an OSHA inspection. In all, Ashley faces 12 willful and 12 repeat violations at $70,000 each for a total of $1,680,000 in fines. Another 14 serious violations added almost another $100,000 to the total. Most of the citations were for machine guarding and hazardous energy (lockout/tagout) violations. OSHA increased the total number of violations by citing on a machine-by-machine basis in some cases. Ashley Furniture has also now been placed in the Severe Violator Enforcement Program which mandates follow-up inspections. The investigations were kicked off after an employee lost three fingers while operating a woodworking machine with proper equipment.
