Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater announced the arrest of a Pompano Beach construction company owner in a $1.8 million misclassification scheme. According to the CFO release, the owner of “Tocoa Builders Inc. is alleged to have misrepresented information regarding [the company’s] operations, employees and payroll when applying for a workers’ compensation policy.” By doing so, the owner allegedly avoided at least $1.8 million in comp premium payments. The initial investigation stemmed from a “stop work” order, which the employer violated. Charges include workers’ compensation premium fraud and grand theft, both of which are first degree felonies and could result in 20 years in prison.
