A bill recently filed in Texas could allow the Attorney General’s office in that state to assume jurisdiction of all insurance fraud cases through the creation of a new “Public Integrity Unit.” Under House Bill 776, filed by Rep. Debbie Riddle, a Republican from Spring, the Public Integrity Unit would prosecute insurance fraud cases and violations of the motor fuels tax. This bill is contrary to the Texas Department of Insurance’s recent efforts to step up fraud investigation and prosecution.
