The Workers Defense Project, based in Austin, TX, has revealed that it is finalizing a bill that stipulates mandatory workers’ comp coverage for the construction industry in the state. Texas is the only state in the country that allows employers to “non-subscribe” or forgo comp coverage entirely, with no internal equivalent. WDP indicated to WorkCompCentral reporters that it was nearly prepared to file the measure. The last legislative session (2013 as Texas operates biannually) saw a similar bill which failed, but WDP and its supporters are optimistic about this year’s session.
