The U.S. Department of Labor has stated that the four employee deaths associated with a methyl mercaptan leak at the DuPont chemical plant in La Porte, Texas in November 2014 were preventable. After a Labor Department investigation, OSHA cited DuPont late last week with 11 safety violations and identified scores of safety upgrades the company must undertake to prevent future accidents at its Lannate/API manufacturing building in La Porte. The company employs 313 workers who manufacture crop protection materials and chemicals there. DuPont was cited for one repeat, nine serious and one other OSHA violation with a $99,000 total fine. The repeat violation was assessed for not training employees on using the building’s ventilation system, an issue they were cited for previously in July 2010.
