National Oilwell Varco, a Houston-based oil and gas drilling equipment manufacturer and supplier, will shut down one of its Houma facilities and lay off 80 employees in phases over the next several weeks. The closure comes as oil prices sink below $30 per barrel for the first time in more than a decade. The LWC, in a press release, stated that National Oilwell Varco issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) on Thursday, January 7th and that the employer announced in the WARN that it would provide affected employees with additional pay and benefits as they were unable to provide sufficient notice “due to economic reasons.”
