Business Insurance has published a feature on medications such as Abilify and Actiq that are being used off-label to treat injured workers, prompting the workers’ comp sector to focus on curbing inappropriate prescribing that can be expensive and dangerous. BI references research that shows that about one in five of all prescriptions are written for off-label use, or uses outside those approved by the FDA. Experts say the practice has become increasingly common in workers’ comp, especially with certain antipsychotic drugs. Off-label prescribing is also a major issue with opioid prescriptions, as such narcotics were originally intended for end of life or cancer pain only.
