The American Hospital Association (AHA) has released a new checklist to help providers feel prepared for the switch to ICD-10, which looms on October 1st of this year. According to a Healthcare Finance report, the guidance is needed, as up to half of physicians report not being ready and a quarter say they are unsure ( via August 3 survey by Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange.) The AHA checklist contains such tips as:
- Check with major trading partners for workers compensation, automobile insurance or other liability carriers that are not covered by HIPAA to ensure they will be transitioning to ICD-10.
- Evaluate documentation improvement efforts, including tools to assist physicians and others in preparing supportive documentation.
- Evaluate whether coding productivity will drop, and by how much.
