In safety news:

Outgoing Labor Secretary Thomas Perez issued a Memorandum to the American People, detailing the work of the Department of Labor under his leadership and delineating the challenges that lie ahead for the next administration. Perez also used the document to make broad policy recommendations and take aim at state workers’ comp systems, saying that:

“The promise of workers’ compensation must be restored, not only to preserve the livelihood of injured workers and their families, but to give employers incentives to utilize injury and illness prevention programs to mitigate hazards before someone gets hurt or becomes ill. The Federal government must stand on the side of America’s workers who too often are victims of inadequate and dysfunctional state systems.”
