Gallup’s annual “State of the States” survey revealed the states with the largest proportion of citizens taking mood-altering prescription or illicit drugs. Six southern states, including Louisiana, were in the top ten. Louisiana sits at number five, with 22.9 percent of people reporting “almost every day” use of “drugs or medications, including prescription drugs, which affect mood and relaxation.” The three states with the lowest “almost every day” responses: Alaska, Wyoming and California. Gallup cites the high rates of narcotic prescriptions in southern states (via CDC data) as a major component to the results.
