Mainstream newspaper the Miami Herald is making a rare foray into the technicalities of workers’ compensation in a new series entitled “Contract to Cheat,” which began Sunday September 7th and will examine seven state’s (including the Herald’s home state of Florida) workers’ comp issues. The reports will focus especially on “cheating” the system through payroll fraud. Employees misclassified as “independent contractors” are a major problem across the country. The states to be included in the series are: Texas, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, and California. The reporters cite New York as an example of a state which has made significant progress. See the overview on the series with links to each individual article from the Miami Herald here.
