A relatively new Berkshire Hathaway Inc. venture is getting attention; the unit is an online commercial platform catering to the needs of small businesses. Called biBERK, the service allows small business owners to shop online for commercial vehicle, general liability, property, workers’ compensation, and eventually, professional liability insurance. According to a recent report in Reuters, biBERK is the brainchild of Ajit Jain, a top Berkshire executive. Jain, whose background is in “big data,” said the unit is signing up twice the customers it did a year ago. In the workers’ compensation section, biBERK typically provides instant quotes to 60 percent of applicants, denies 20 percent, and asks 20 percent to speak with representatives.
