Labor unions are urging caution as Congress fast tracks legislation to allow self-driving vehicles on the road. The House Energy & Commerce committee recently advanced legislation on a 54-0 vote that would begin the process of changing regulations to allow cars and trucks that operate without human drivers. Similar legislation is being considered in the Senate with bipartisan support. Analysts generally agree that jobs associated with making the vehicles may grow, but commercial drivers could be displaced. The AFL-CIO has raised worker safety concerns and the Center for Global Policy Solutions estimated that autonomous vehicles could result in 4 million lost jobs.
